Why supplement?
It is quite a challenge in today’s day and age to get all the essential nutrients from food. The quality of our food deteriorates enormously, while the burden on our body increases (due to the hectic pace of the day, environmental pollution, etc.). Such factors have an influence on our nutrient needs. More than enough reasons to supplement your daily diet with a good multivitamin and possibly the necessary basic supplements.
In addition to taking good care of your health preventively, you sometimes feel the need to tackle a specific point. Take the immune system, for example. The immune system is a biological defense system. It consists of an intricate network of cells and processes that protect our body. This system sometimes requires some attention. You can adjust your diet to get extra vitamins and minerals. You can also take supplements, such as Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Zinc and Andrographis, which help ensure a good resistance.
What are synthetic food supplements?
Synthetic means artificially imitated. This applies to almost all supplements. In theory, it is possible to extract most ingredients from nature, but this is a priceless solution. The distinction between good and less good quality has to do with the choice of ingredients, especially the forms, because products must be recognizable for the body to be absorbed. The aim is to use a product that is identical to nature. This means that the produced product biochemically corresponds to its natural form, so that it is recognizable to the body, can be absorbed and does not have a harmful effect.
How do you know which brand of dietary supplements is of good quality?
Choose a brand with a close collaboration with a training institute. They have a lot of knowledge and mainly work with high-quality products. See if the brand is also prescribed by health professionals. You can see this on the website (by checking if they also have a business page). A good health professional only works with brands that work with good ingredients and compositions.

Why biologically active forms?
In an ideal world, our body is able to convert ‘non-active’ substances into ‘active’ substances. However, there are conceivable situations in which this conversion does not take place or does not take place optimally, for example in the case of absorption problems, lack of cofactors or various (hereditary) metabolic diseases. By supplementing the bioactive forms, the body is presented with bite-sized nutrients that can immediately unfold their beneficial properties.
Which mineral compounds are easily absorbed?
Inorganic mineral compounds have a low absorption rate (between 0 and 20%). In addition, they prevent proper excretion, causing digestive complaints and accumulation of the mineral in question. Organic compounds have a lower elemental content, but are much better absorbed. This is because minerals bound to an amino acid are more recognizable to the body. The absorption rate is around 90%. Transport takes place up to the cell. VitOrtho opts for organic mineral compounds, such as citrate, bisglycinate, malate and taurate. For the iron preparations, we always work with iron bisglycinate, knowing that other forms can cause constipation.
What forms of vitamin C are there?
Ascorbic acid is the cheapest and most commonly used form of vitamin C. This form is easily absorbed and for many an excellent form of vitamin C. However, there is a possibility that you cannot tolerate this acidic variant well. Then we recommend supplementing a deacidified vitamin C and thus opting for vitamin C bound to a mineral such as calcium or magnesium. These are called mineral ascorbates. For example, take a look at our C-1000 Ascorbate complex.
What B vitamins are there and how do I know what the active forms are?
There are no less than 8 different B vitamins. We depend on food and supplements for the daily intake of these vitamins, because we can hardly store them. These B vitamins are known to work closely together. We know B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B8, B11 and B12. There are various substances available in supplements for each B vitamin. We distinguish between the biologically active forms and the non-active forms. In particular, B6, B11 (folic acid) and B12 are vitamins that you want to supplement in the active form. The inactive forms can accumulate and cause complaints. Choose a folic acid as folate, B6 as Pyridoxine-5-phosphate and a B12 in the form of methylcobalamin and/or adenosylcobalamin. Then the body can use those substances immediately and you prevent complaints.
Why is vitamin D3 more absorbable?
D3 is the animal form of vitamin D and is better absorbed because the body recognizes this form better. Recently, there has also been a plant-based vitamin D3 (extracted from lichen) that is therefore also suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
Why is vitamin K2 more absorbable than vitamin K1?
Vitamin K2 is obtained from a biofermentation process from natto and has the highest bioavailability of all Vitamin K species and is stable. In addition, vitamin K2 as MK-7 has a longer half-life (it disappears from the blood more slowly) and is specifically good for bones. Vitamin K1 and K2 are both good for blood clotting.
Our diet mainly contains vitaminK1, especially in green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, strongsters, basil and parsley. Vitamin K2 consists of a group of isomers distinguished by the length of the isoprenyl side chains, menaquinones (MK-n), mainly MK-4, MK-7, MK-8, MK-9 and MK-10. A longer chain results in greater fat solubility. These menaquinones are produced by certain bacteria and are not or hardly found in the diet, with the exception of butter, cheese, cottage cheese and natto (fermented soybeans). In addition, the microbiota of the colon produces vitaminK2, but its absorption is limited. The intestinal bacteria that are able to produce menaquinones are mainly found in places where there is virtually no absorption, partly because the necessary bile is lacking.
Why is it important to supplement iron as bisglycinate?
A possible side effect of iron is constipation. It has been found that iron as bisglycinate does not cause this side effect. That is why VitOrtho always opts for this easily absorbable form.
What is meant by fair labelling?
Our view of labels is simple: what is on the label should also be in the packaging, and vice versa. The labels are designed in such a way that everything is clearly and concretely described. All ingredients are listed, including inactive ingredients and potential allergens, as well as scientifically substantiated and permitted claims, health risks, detailed descriptions and a ‘use by’ date.
What does clean label mean?
As few excipients as possible are used in VitOrtho products. We only choose raw materials and additives that the body can tolerate well and are therefore not burdensome.
What does GMO-free mean?
GMO stands for genetically modified organisms (GMO in Dutch). GMO foods contain components of crops that have been genetically modified. This adjustment is intended to make the crops more resistant to certain diseases or pesticides, or to contain extra nutrients, for example. Such adapted organisms do not normally occur in nature. NOW’s top priority is to produce 100% GMO-free products. At the moment, this is more than 90%. NOW uses a non-GMO guarantee procedure to determine whether or not a product is GMO-free. This guarantee procedure is based on strict NOW quality requirements and consists of a combination of careful documentation and test results. The products of the VitOrtho brand are 100% non-GMO. Non-GMO project is an independent organization. It takes care of the verification of audits and documented evidence of each product.
Which vials does VitOrtho work with?
The majority of VitOrtho and NOW products are packaged in PET packaging. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is strong, light, recyclable and durable. The bottles protect the contents against oxygen, moisture, UV samples, dust, bacteria and ensure a long shelf life of the products and prevent oxidation. PET plastic packaging is safe for food contact (food grade). Of course, all VitOrtho packaging is BPA-free (bisphenol A). BPA is a chemical that is harmful to fertility and can have an effect on hormone balance.
Are the products suitable for vegans and/or vegetarians?
On our products we mention the recognizable green symbols that indicate whether a product is suitable for vegans and/or vegetarians. In 2019, we developed a special supplementation line for vegans,
with the multivitamin More-in-1 Vegan as the showpiece. The composition is based on the specific nutrients that can be deficient in such a diet. Most vitamins and minerals have been omitted, assuming that a vegan eats more vegetables, fruit, seeds and nuts. In addition to the More-in-1 Vegan, there are various supplements specially developed for vegans available from us, including VitOrtho Vitamin D3 and K2. Currently, more than 75% of our range is suitable for vegans and/or vegetarians. Where possible, we always choose fabrics, despite the fact that they are sometimes more expensive to purchase, to also serve these target groups.
Which additives (additives and fillers) are used?
Additives are substances that are added to products because otherwise the product cannot be made. Another word for this is excipients. Think of fillers, binders, preservatives, etc. It is important to choose supplements that choose the best excipients, which are not stressful for the body.
What are liposomal dietary supplements?
In liposomal food supplements, the nutrients are ‘packaged’ in tiny fat-like globules, consisting of a double layer of phospholipids: liposomes. Encapsulating both hydrophilic and lipophilic nutrients in liposomes has been shown to be particularly effective in circumventing certain adverse effects of digestion. The liposomal ‘packaging’ guarantees excellent absorption and ensures that the active ingredients reach the body’s cells faster and easier. Cell membranes, like liposomes, are made up of a double layer of phospholipids. When liposomes come into contact with a cell membrane, the liposome fuses with the cell membrane and the contents of the cavity are released into the cell. Thus, the nutrients are protected from degradation and oxidation, and the liposome persists until the nutrients are released into the cells and tissues. Research shows that this form of supplement is absorbed 3 to 7 times better. Click here for our liposomal products.
Why a multivitamin and what should I look out for?
In recent decades, several studies have clearly shown that our daily diet, no matter how varied and balanced, does not provide enough of all the micronutrients and macronutrients important for health. What should you pay attention to when choosing a good multi? You want to have a multi with the best absorbable connections. That means; Choose biologically active forms and easily absorbable mineral compounds as much as possible. In addition, you want to have optimal dosages. If you take a multi with, for example, 1000 IU (equals 25mcg), you will immediately get a good basic vitamin D3. You also want a quality product with as few excipients as possible and in any case excipients that are not harmful to the body. VitOrtho has a line of multivitamins with a high-quality tailor-made composition for every target group. Click here for our multivitamins.
Why supplementation for children?
The period from birth to adulthood is perhaps the most tumultuous period of human beings in physical terms. After the first year of life until puberty, a child grows an average of about 7 cm per year. In puberty, this increases to 10-12 cm per year, the so-called growth spurt. In the same period, body weight increases from a few pounds to about 70 kg. In addition, a child goes through different stages of development and undergoes various physical changes. Many micronutrients are involved in all these growth and development processes. Therefore, a good supply of vitamins and minerals is of the utmost importance. Growing children actually need proportionally more vitamins and minerals than adults.
Unfortunately, many children’s diets are not too good, so they may not be getting enough nutrients at an early age. Supplementation with supplements is therefore desirable, especially for children. View our product category ‘especially for children‘ here.
