L-serine
A small amino acid of great importance
Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, the molecules responsible for building and repairing body tissue and carrying out countless functions throughout the body. They are involved in everything from nutrient transport to tissue repair. Although hundreds of amino acids occur in nature, twenty are particularly important for humans. These are known as the proteinogenic amino acids.

L-serine is one of the twenty naturally occurring amino acids found in the human body. It was first identified in 1865 by Emil Cramer, who isolated it from proteins in raw silk. The name is derived from the Latin word sericum, meaning silk.
This small, non-essential amino acid is found in a variety of protein-rich foods, such as eggs, meat, poultry, fish, and dairy.
There are also plant sources that contain serine such as soybeans, nuts, watercress, carob seeds, lupins, peanuts, asparagus, lentils, pistachios, sesame seeds, cauliflower, leafy green vegetables, and whole grains.

L-Serine serves as a precursor for a variety of important biological compounds, including phosphoglycerides, glycerides, sphingolipids and phosphatidylserine. Serine exists in two enantiomeric forms: L-serine and D-serine. L-Serine is the form naturally incorporated into proteins and can be converted into D-serine by the vitamin B6-dependent enzyme serine racemase. This reaction is reversible, allowing D-serine to be converted back into L-serine. D-Serine is found in relatively high concentrations in various regions of the brain and in specific neurons, where it plays important physiological roles.
